چکیده

The seminal discovery of light-induced changes in transition-metal nitrosyl complexes in the late 1970s and their identification as metastable linkage isomers almost 20 years after the initial discoveries have in recent years motivated a plethora of experimental and theoretical studies. They have raised the question of whether the linkage isomers play a role in the many crucial biological processes involving nitric oxide, which though likely, is still a subject of investigation. The linkage isomers have potential technological importance, as the change in refractive index on a molecular scale, associated with the photoinduced change in the crystals, in principle allows the design of very high capacity storage devices. This review summarizes the current knowledge in the still-developing field and includes a discussion of photoinduced metastable linkage isomers of related substances.

Crystallography of molecular excited states . Transition - metal nitrosyl complexes and the study of transient species

The study of photoinduced processes in crystals is a frontier area of crystallographic research, which requires development of novel experimental and computational methods. In a series of studies, long-lived metastable states, generated upon photoirradiation of transition-metal nitrosyl complexes, have been identified as ç nitrosyl and isonitrosyl linkage isomers, and their detailed geometry ha...

The first photocrystallographic evidence for light-induced metastable linkage isomers of ruthenium sulfur dioxide complexes.

Light-induced metastable linkage isomers of trans-[Ru(NH(3))(4)Cl(SO(2))]Cl and trans-[Ru(NH(3))(4)(H(2)O)(SO(2))](C(6)H(5)SO(3))(2) have been identified for the first time using photocrystallographic methods. In both linkage isomers the SO(2) ligand is side bound, but the Ru-O and Ru-S distances are considerably longer and almost equal in the trans-H(2)O isomer. DFT calculations confirm that b...

Photoinduced oxygen transfer and double-linkage isomerism in a cis-(NO)(NO2) transition-metal complex by photocrystallography, FT-IR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Photocrystallographic experiments show that laser exposure of crystals of [Ru(bpy)2(NO)(NO2)](PF6)2 at 90 K produces a double isonitrosyl-nitrito linkage isomer and provide the detailed geometry of the metastable species generated. The analysis indicates that the isomerization is accomplished through an intramolecular redox reaction involving oxygen transfer from the nitro to the nitrosyl group...

Bioactive Salen-type Schiff Base Transition Metal Complexes as Possible Anticancer Agents

Although metal-based anticancer drugs have been recognized as the most effective agents over the organic compounds, non-selectivity and high toxic effects have limited their applications in a way that only three Pt-analogues have progressed into clinical use. These problems have spurred chemists to develop different strategies based on alternative targets. This work focuses on predicting potenc...
